History 1898 : Duncan MacCallum, of Glen Nevis Distillery, Campbeltown, and FW Brickmann, spirit broker, of Leith, founded the Benromach Distillery
1899 : financial problems
1900 : inactive until May when it was reported to be conducting trials
1911 : acquired by Harvey McNair & Co of London
1912 : recommence distilling in the spring
1914 : closed during the First World War
1918 : bought by John Joseph Calder, who promptly sold it to the Benromach Distillery Ltd, a private company registered in late 1919 in Edinburgh
1938 : The distillery was transferred in 1938 to Associated Scottish Distilleries Ltd (ASD). ASD was bought by National Distillers, an American corporation that in turn sold it to The Distillers Company Limited of Edinburgh in 1953. Benromach was then transferred to Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd (SMD).
1966 : still house was rebuilt and an oil-fired boiler was installed
1968: the maltings was converted to a cask store
1974 : mash house was rebuilt and the tunroom was modernised
1983 : March 24th saw the last filling under the ownership of United Distillers. The workers on that day who witnessed that last filling signed their names on the filling store wall. Benromach Distillery was now officially closed.
1993 : Gordon and MacPhail bought the mothballed site
1998 : On October 15th, HRH Prince of Wales officially reopened the distillery at a grand opening ceremony
1999 : the Malt Whisky Centre opened
2000 : The Malt Whisky Centre was awarded a four-star visitor attraction grading from the Scottish Tourist Board. The Distillery also joined the world famous Malt Whisky Trail.
2004 : Gordon and MacPhail releases the first whisky distilled at Benromach since 1983: Benromach Traditional.

DISTILLERY BOTTLINGS

Benromach - Traditional - 40%
Chillfiltered.
Cask
:
80% bourbon, 20% sherry.
Colour
:
Straw yellow.
Nose:
Citrus fruits (lemons & limes) with hint of honey and pine resin. Peaty malty notes in the background.
Palate:
Smoky with cereal and malt flavours. Dries up with spicy/peppery notes followed by a delicate floral edge.
Finish:
Slightly sweet with a hint of smoke and malt.
Benromach - Organic
Cask:
New American oak.
Colour
:
Golden Brown.
Nose:
Sweet, charred oak aromas with fresh fruit notes (bananas and pineapples). An earthy, toasted aroma also present
Palate:
Sweet, vanilla and toffee flavours. Hints of green apples and orange peel with a rich resinous note.
Finish:
Sweet oak and hints of fruit.
Benromach - Centenary Bottling - 17 year old - 43%
Cask:
Sherry.
Colour:
Warm copper.
Nose:
Sherried, nutty, vanilla.
Palate:
Oaky, slightly smoky, fruity edge.
Finish:
Liquorice.
Benromach - 18 year old - 40%

Sherry.
Colour:
Rich amber.
Nose:
Fruity – peaches and nectarines, also hints of citrus fruits. Subtle sweet chocolate edge and malty nose.
Palate:
Fruit and spice together with delicate floral, aromatic note. Traces of sherry wood evident.
Finish:
Floral with a slight creaminess.
Benromach - 21 year old - 43%

Sherry.
Colour:
Bright gold.
Nose:
Sweet, fruits - peaches and nectarines. Hints of toasted malt and a
green leafy aroma.
Palate:
Sweet, sherrywood flavours. Some charred oak and resinous
flavours. Rich.
Finish:
Slightly dry with sherry overtones.
Benromach - 25 year old - 43%
Cask:
Bourbon.
Colour:
Pale gold.
Nose:
Toasted spices with a sharp fruitiness – citrus oils. There is also a subtle vanilla note.
Palate:
Spicy, almost peppery with a rounding creaminess. The fruitiness develops with the spices, reminiscent of rich fruitcake.
Finish:
Lasting.
Benromach - 55 year old - 42,4%

Colour:
Bright Orange Gold.
Nose:
Sweet with rich fruit aromas - orange peel and red apple skins. A delicate perfumed note and spices - cinnamon stick. A subtle smoky edge with traces of menthol and hessian.
Palate:
Coating with an oily texture, oak and peat smoke flavours combine. Sweet elements and some herbal flavours - a hint of spearmint.
Finish:
Slightly sweet with traces of fruit and smoke.
  Benromach 1974 - 40%

Golden-topaz, lambent.
Nose:
Fruity-stewed apples and cinnamon, evidence of sherry ageing.
Palate:
Fruity with cedar wood notes.
Finish:
Bitter dark chocolate.
  Benromach 1973 - 40%
Cask:
Sherry.
Colour:
Amber.
Nose:
Soft fruits – strawberries/blueberries, sweet creamy notes and a slight phenolic hint.
Palate:
Cedar wood initially turning smoky – burnt toffee fruitcake.
Finish:
Dry with a touch of smoke.
  Benromach 1969 - 43%
Cask:
Sherry.
Colour:
Rich orange gold.
Nose:
Sweet sherry with apples, raisins and sultanas. Some camphor and menthol aromas with hints of linseed oil. Spices – cloves and cinnamon.
Palate:
Smoky with a rich spicy note. Oiled / polished oak. Sherry and fruitcake flavours slowly develop.
Finish:
Unsurprisingly the sherry influence remains to the end.
Benromach 1968 - 41,8%
Cask:
Sherry.
Colour:
Rich.
Nose:
Sweet, rich fruit aromas - ripe apples & pears. Smoky - burnt wood notes together with a dry spicy edge - liqurorice & aniseed.
Palate:
Rich fruit & spices, resinous with cream sherry flavours. Smoky, okay notes also present which slowly dry the palate.
Finish:
Sherry and a touch of peat smoke.

INDEPENDENT BOTTLINGS FROM CADENHEAD

Benromach 1976 - Cadenhead - 27 year old - 57,1%
Limited to 258 bottles.

Nose:
Mandarin segments and a slight hit of Cointreau. Sour fruits;sweet oak.
Palate:
Soft and mellow with those mandarin flavours again. Everything on the nose is delivered on the palate.
Finish:
The finish is very long and perfectly balanced.

INDEPENDENT BOTTLINGS FROM GORDON & MACPHAIL

Benromach Sassicaia Wood Finish 45%
Cask:
First fill Bourbon and Sherry casks followed by 27 months in Sassicaia casks.
Colour:
Amber with a deep Ruby glow.
Nose:
Rich, dried fruits - blackberries, blackcurrants, hints of malt and spices with a touch of vanilla. Peat smoke lingers in the background.
Palate:
Rich, sweet fruit flavours balanced by drier spice / pepper and smoke. The fruitiness develops along with a strong liquorice note.
Finish:
Rich, fruit with traces of peat smoke.
Benromach Tokaji Wood Finish - 45%
Cask
:
First fill Bourbon and Sherry followed by months in Tokaji casks.
Colour:
Bright amber.
Nose:
Sweet with malt and fruit notes (sultanas and figs). Subtle smokiness (charred oak) laced with spices - nutmeg and treacle.
Palate:
Sweet and fruity (ripe fruits, rich sherry element) balanced with spices (cracked peppercorns) and a drying smokiness.
Finish:
Rich fruit with a drying spiciness.
