History 1897 : established by James Isles under the name "Highland Esk Distillery"
1899 : taken over by J.F. Caille and renamed into "North Esk Distillery"
1938 : bought by Associated Scottish Distilleries to produce grain whisky under the name "Montrose Distillery"
1954 : sold to DCL
1964 : taken over by SMD to produce single malt whisky under the name "Hillside"
1980 : name changed into "Glenesk"
1985 : closed
1992 : license expired

Information The distillery, which contributed significantly in the VAT 69 blend, closed in 1985. As much of the whisky went into blends, it is rarely found as a single malt.

Glenesk 1985 - Connoisseurs Choice - 40%
Cask:
First Fill Sherry Butts.
Colour:
Chesnut brown.
Nose:
Rich fruits - dates, figs, sultanas. Nutty, walnuts with a hint of wood oil.
Palate:
Initially fruit then smoke and peat begin leading onto rich sweet, cream sherry flavours.
Finish:
Sherry with some smokiness.

Glenesk 1984 - Connoisseurs Choice - 43%
Cask:
Refill Sherry Hogsheads.
Colour:
Pale gold.
Nose:
Aromatic with peppery and earthy aromas. Traces of dried fruits with smoky (bonfire embers) elements. A little toffee sweetness emerges.
Palate:
Sweet with smoky notes. Some fruit flavours combined with dry grass and sandalwood.
Finish:
Fruit elements with drying spicy/smoky edge.
