A 157-year-old whisky sold for more than $59,200 in Glasgow on Friday, making it possibly the most expensive Scotch ever auctioned in the world.

The Bowmore single malt, which was bottled in 1850, was sold at McTear's auctioneers in Scotland for 29,400 pounds to an anonymous telephone bidder, the Agence France-Presse reported.

Bowmore, who had announced prior to the auction that it wanted to return the bottle to display it at the distillery on the island of Islay, off the west coast of Scotland, failed to match the competitor's offer.

The price was higher than the pre-sale estimate of between 15,000 and 20,000 pounds ($30,580 to $40,773). The bottle of Scotch bottle, the oldest known bottle of Bowmore, commanded the high price despite the bottle's cork dropping into the whisky, an auction spokesman said.

Rich and intense with complex layers of sherried oak, spiced apples, caramelised pears and toasted almonds. Intriguing hints of beeswax, fresh ground spices and a subtle earthiness.

First impressions are of mixed spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves), combined with sweet, fruity, sherried flavours. On addition of a little water a delicate vanilla character reveals itself with a beautiful stewed fruit sweetness and a touch of oak tannin.
Finish:
Rewardingly long and rich with a hint of dryness at the very end.

NOSE: The effect of the re-charred casks is huge, giving a distinct burnt caramel character. The woody flavours are reminiscent of brown toast and butter, well-browned flapjack and roasted oats. Also detected notes of everything from tawny marmalade and candle wax, through to ice cream soda and Irn Bru!
PALATE: Rich and dry with huge amounts of flavour. Sweet oak, peaches and honey concentrated at the back of the palate. The mouth feel is very lively, with a tingle of salt and citrus.
FINISH: A well balanced finish, as smokey notes mingle with sherry, oak and caramel. The finish is long, rich and warming.

Colour:
Rich amber with ripe gold hues.
Nose:
Intense, deep, creamy. The sherry immediately signs the aromatic profile with luscious fruity and spicy notes. Polished old oak floor. It's like walking into an antique shop. Enticing scents of exotic wood (sandelwood) with a touch of ceder. Cigar box. Creamier notes rise up, like wrapped up in a delicate oaky frame. Orange crème brûlée. Candied fruits (tangerine, pineapple). Pralines. Dundee cake with raisins soaked in whisky. On time, cider apples cooked in a cinnamon syrup. Hint of damp chalky cellar wall.
Palate:
Silky, caressing. Sweet at start then releasing a full bunch of spices: ginger, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg. The spicy screen then opens on exotic fruitiness. Roasted pineapple. Developing luscious dark chocolate and orange peel flavours.
Finish:
Dry, spicy. Keeps teasing the tastebuds all the way through and comes back on a sweeter fruity note.
